Colombo is the capital city and
also one of the largest cities of Srilanka. It’s an important industrial and
financial hub of Srilanka. Colombo is having 2 types of cities- Metro city and
Greater Colombo. Best time to visit in Colombo is during the North East Monsoon
season (November-April).
Colombo Tourism Attractions:
The major tourist attractions of
Colombo include Galle face Green, the National Museum, Mount Lavinia beach, Viharamahadevi Park, Gangayamaya
temple etc.
Galle Face Green is an open
space of about 5 hectare that runs along the coast of Indian Ocean. It is the
largest available open area in the city and hence is the best loved place of
both tourists and the Singalese people for spending their free time.
Viharamahadevi Park
is a park that dates back to the period of British rule. It is situated close
to the National Museum and houses a play area for children and a small zoo. The
National Museum of the country is a treat to visit. It has the cultural
evidences of the nation, a large collection of books, manuscripts, bronze and
brass utensils from ancient era, a number of marvellous
paintings etc.
Kelaniya
Raja MahaVihara is another important site. Legend has it that Budha had
preached here before 2000 years. Another important site is the Mount Lavinia beach which was famous
even at the colonial times. The slave island with its nearby fort and the
Dehiwala zoo that has a large collection of fauna anda vast area of about 11
acres.
Wolvendaal Church also attract
many tourists. It was built around the eighteenth century and belongs to the
period when Dutch ruled the country. It also contains unique tombstones that
are set into the floor but was removed into the fort in about 1813. Under the
government, there is also a hardicrafts emporium called Laksala which is an
important site to visit.

Being the financially and commercially
important city of the country it is easy to reach Colombo by air and road.
By Air:
The Bandaranaike international
airport is situated to the north coast of the city.it is about 40 km away from
the central city. The other domestic air services are handled by the Ratmalana
Airport. The national air service called Sri Lankan Airlines has flight
services from and to the places all over the world, even to other continents
like Australia, Europe, Middle East, and all over Asia.
By Rail:
The train station is also at a reasonable distance from the city. The railway stations near Colombo are Fort station, Maradana station and Cotta road railway station. They connect the major cities and towns with Colombo and are economical too.
By Road:
The major bus station of the city is about 45 minutes drive from the International airport. Once you get to Colombo, getting around the city is quite easy. There are bus services, taxi and tuktuks( three wheelers) available for this purpose.
To utilise time efficiently it is necessary to
understand which places to visit at which time. For this a clear understanding
